Amita, who divides her practice between Tucson and Durango, Colorado, is the owner of Surya Health and Wellness, an integrative wellness center in Durango where she practices Ayurvedic medicine and nutrition consulting. Of Indian origin, she received her Ayurvedic education in both India and North America, an experience that has given her a unique perspective and allowed her to remain true to the purity of Ayurvedic knowledge while deeply understanding its application in the Western world. With the support of her two teachers, Dr. Hemant Gupta and Dr. Shirish Nathwani, she has been in private practice since 2004.
Amita works in both traditional and conventional modalities, her speciality being digestive and metabolic disorders. Amita begins with digestion and incorporates diet, lifestyle, and—most importantly—state of mind to gain a greater understanding of the whole person. Important to her approach is recognizing stress, grief, addictions, and relationships as factors affecting health. She helps each client come to greater understanding and acceptance of life and all its circumstances in order to facilitate the healing process.
Each consultation consists of an individualized assessment. The client is asked to complete an intake form that outlines personal, family, and health history, along with dietary and lifestyle habits. This gives Amita a picture of the overall health of the client. Please bring in any lab results, supplements, herbal remedies, and prescription drugs that you are taking in order to help facilitate your care with your other health care providers. Upon assessment, treatments and/or recommendations are administered based on each individual's needs.
In Ayurvedic Medicine, the relationship between practitioner and client is very important. Confidentiality, compassion, and trust are the key elements to a successful healing interaction. Amita promises to uphold these principles and looks forward to sharing them with you.
